Calling on government for strong net zero policy.

10/10/2023

A commitment to tackling climate change.

We have joined more than 100 organisations signing an open letter to the Prime Minister calling on the government to provide us clarity and ambition on climate policies – allowing us to deliver net zero in a way that’s good for business, people and the planet.

The letter asks the Prime Minister to restore confidence in the national effort to improve the efficiency of buildings after he recently announced slowing down climate policies. The letter organised by the UK Green Building Council demonstrates the frustration reverberating across the industry when more, not less leadership and enabling policies are needed from Government.

Delaying the essential work to insulate our inefficient homes and switch from burning climate-damaging gas to heat pumps and renewable energy, will delay our pathway to net zero.

Some of the biggest losers from the policy changes include renters stuck in cold damp homes with huge energy bills, with delays to landlords obligations to improve the energy rating of the properties.

The slow-down in decarbonisation policies have detrimental impacts on society, including delaying the investment needed to build skills and capacity in the supply chain for decarbonisation. A broad range of construction sector stakeholders have supported the UKGBC letter including developers, architects and contractors. Signatories include Grosvensor, GPE, LendLease, Laing O’Rourke, BAM, CBRE, Gerald Eve, Allies & Morrison, Sheppard Robson, Pekins & Will and Waterman.

We support UKGBC’s goal to radically transform the sustainability of the built environment. We actively work with them to help shape practical guidance for the industry to navigate to net zero and it’s part of our North Star philosophy to be “human-centric and planet-conscious” in all that we do.
