Our people: Bashar AlShawa.
Developing research-driven solutions for industry problems.
I started my career…
…as a sustainability consultant in Dubai, UAE. My undergraduate degree is in architecture and I came to the UK to complete an MSc in environmental design, then went on to do a PhD in buildings’ energy policy, both from the University of Bath.
What excites me about my current role…
…The variety of projects we get involved in as well as having the needed support to conduct various research and development activities to improve our offering.
I mainly look at how we can achieve…
… stringent energy and carbon targets for construction projects and ensuring their resilience in the face of a changing climate.
Working within sustainability means…
… I can have a positive impact on the planet.
I am interested in exploring various design interventions – from passive design to the selection of hvac system – and ensuring that the impact of these options, both in terms of operational and embodied carbon, is available to the project team at an early stage.
This would allow project teams to ‘pick and choose’ a design configuration that simultaneously meets the project’s sustainability brief, planning regulations, and budget.
The groups that I lead that help to move the industry forward are …
…the Energy Community and I’m also involved in UKGBC’s work which gives people the chance to drive sustainability forward within the sector and set the agenda towards the transition to a sustainable built environment.
Whilst not at work…
…I enjoy playing sports and writing.
