Expanding our daylighting capabilities.

The impact of daylight design has become increasingly recognised as integral to the success of projects – affecting everything from planning, performance, selling, and the end-user experience.

In response to this, our Lighting Design team welcomed Ruth Kelly Waskett at the end of last year, who joined as Principal Daylight Designer. She is a highly skilled daylight specialist, who has been involved with designing buildings for more than 15 years – first as a mechanical building services engineer, and later as a lighting specialist.

She is currently a visiting lecturer at UCL and has been assembling lighting content for the university’s new MEng Architectural Engineering course.

Ruth says: “My PhD involved looking at the application of smart glazing in a UK office building and I continue to enjoy my part-time work teaching lighting, daylight, and research methods. I’ve really enjoyed my time so far at Hoare Lea; it’s been great to get back to working with real buildings after being solely in academia for a while.”

Ruth’s five facts.

• Ruth chaired the SLL task group responsible for the revision of the 2014 CIBSE Lighting Guide 10 (Daylighting) and is a Vice President of the SLL.
• She previously worked at Atkins as a lighting designer and at Max Fordham as a building services engineer.
• Ruth is a contributor to the Daylight module of the Light Education Trust course.
• She was the Society of Light and Lighting’s (SLL) Young Lighter of the Year in 2006.
• Ruth recently finished her PhD in Daylighting working alongside John Mardaljevic, who is an eminent Professor of Building Daylight Modelling at Loughborough University.
